Nanna Risi (la Pavonia)
Frederick Leighton is the most celebrated salon painter of the Victorian era and became the first artist to be awarded the title of lord. Leighton often inserts sentimental details into his compositions, which is probably the reason for his incredible popularity. The favorite subject of his paintings was mythology.
An interesting detail: His father, Edward Leighton, taught medicine, and his grandfather was the court physician of the Russian Emperor Alexander I.
"Pavonia" is Latin for "peacock". Little is known about this painting. It is only known that in 1859 the Prince of Wales bought it.
Anna Risi was the wife of a simple shoemaker in Rome, but her classical beauty and grace attracted the attention of the artist, and served as a model for many of his paintings.
