Irkutsk is an old Siberian city founded as a prison in 1661; it is one of the few cities in Siberia that has managed to preserve its historical appearance and original layout. The Savior Church is the only surviving building of the prison, together with the Epiphany Cathedral it forms the oldest architectural ensemble of Irkutsk.
