Pha That Luang is one of the important national temples of Laos, which is a symbol of the Buddhist religion and the sovereignty of this country. Its full name is Pha Jedi Lokayulamani, which means the World Precious Sacred Stupa.
The temple is surrounded by a high bastion with narrow loopholes, built by order of King Anauwong in the early 19th century to protect against foreign invaders. Much more impressive than these thick walls are painted stupas built in 3 rows, or 3 levels. Around each level there are special paths equipped with stairs. Each level of the monument differs from the other in its architectural features, which embody the main doctrines of Buddhism. Previously, inside each stupa were smaller stupas made of gold and gold plates. These relics were stolen from the Temple by Chinese bandits in the 19th century. The central stupa of That Luang is crowned with a sculpture in the form of a flower. The height of the Temple is 45 meters, its walls are decorated with sacred Buddhist writings.
