Babelsberg Castle in Potsdam is located on the left bank of the Havel River and is surrounded on all sides by a shady park bearing the same name as the castle itself. The castle was built between 1835 and 1849, in two stages, in the style of English Gothic. For about 50 years it served as the summer residence of Prince William and his wife Augusta. Since 1970, the building of the castle has been given over to accommodate exhibitions of the Museum of Prehistoric Period and Early History. At the end of the 20th century, Babelsberg Castle came under the jurisdiction of the Foundation for Palaces and Gardens of Prussia, and was also included in the World Heritage List in the complex of the general architectural ensemble of Potsdam.
