On the eastern bank of the upper Rhine, a cone-shaped hill rises above the town of Braubach. The castle crowning the hill is distinguished by an unusually slender main tower, towering over the rest of the buildings and the fortress walls. Although the castle is a good target, it is the only castle in the Rhine not affected by enemy attacks. This is Marksburg. For greater stability, the walls of the castle are triangular in shape, and are erected so close to the edge of the hill that in some places it is impossible to distinguish where the wall ends and the rock begins. At first it was a watchtower, most likely built by the Franks in the 10th century, the main tower in the Roman style was built two centuries later, and the subsequent owners of Marksburg erected additional walls. In 1900, the castle was bought by the German Castle Society, so the castle is well preserved to this day and impresses visitors with its buildings erected in different eras and in different architectural styles. Taking a tour of the castle, you can see its interior - the knight's hall, chapel, armory, wine cellar and secret passages.
