Sully-sur-Loire is a small picturesque castle in the city of the same name, which is considered as the “eastern gate” of the Loire Valley. Its peculiarity is the fact that its entire history is associated with the same masters - the Counts of Sully, in particular, with the head of the French government under Henry IV, Duke Maximilien de Bethune. It is thanks to the fact that the castle was in the same hands that it is still in good condition.
Sully-sur-Loire was originally a fortress. In the middle of the 17th century, Sully Castle became a refuge for Anne of Austria and Cardinal Mazarin. Half a century later, the fortress also sheltered another historical figure - it was here that Voltaire arrived in search of refuge from Philip of Orleans, who was angry with his satirical stories.
In 2000, Sully-sur-Loire castle was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. A real medieval fortress, which became a historical monument in 1928, the castle has retained its unique appearance thanks to its wide moats, still filled with water, a massive keep and high towers with a cone-shaped roof.
