60-70 million years ago the mountains Erciyas, Hasan, Melendiz and Gulludag were active volcanoes. The peak of their activity fell on the period of the late Miocene and the ash thrown out by them covered a vast territory of Cappadocia. The ash froze and hardened, forming a thick tuff cover. Volcanic tuff is a white, yellow or red colored sedimentary rock that was formed mainly from volcanic ash. The lava ejected from the volcanoes, in turn, covered the tuff cover with a thinner basalt layer. After several million years, the activity of the volcanoes decreased and a period of rainy climate began. The final formation of the bizarre appearance of the present Cappadocia was completed by rivers, streams and streams crossing the plateau in all directions. Due to the harsh continental climate of Cappadocia with sudden and significant temperature changes, cracks formed in the rocks. Water and ice contributed to the destruction of the rocks, along with heavy rains and the impact of rivers. Where the tuff was covered with basalt crust on top, the water could not wash it off and the famous stone pillars or stone mushrooms were formed ... the so-called fairy fireplaces.
