Cappadocia is the historical name of the area in the east of Asia Minor, on the territory of modern Turkey; characterized by a unique landscape of volcanic origin (about 65-62 million years ago). The famous "stone pillars" of bizarre shapes and outlines were formed sequentially from the action of two opposite natural forces:
- volcanic eruptions and lava outpourings;
- erosion and weathering.
Typical forms of "stone pillars" are mushrooms, but there are also more exotic forms reaching a height of 40 m. Cappadocia is included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.
