The teal whistle is the smallest of all river ducks. Migratory species, in some areas there are sedentary individuals. It chooses wet areas near fresh water bodies and swamps, but can nest in damp forest glades, often far from water, or in mountainous areas. In winter, it can also be seen in swampy meadows, river estuaries, lagoons and along the coastline. A schooling bird, flies quickly at low altitude. The male emits a characteristic melodic trill, while the female, in turn, makes sharp and piercing sounds. It finds animal and plant food in water, feeds mainly at night. Like other river ducks, the teal whistle takes off, keeping its body perpendicular to the surface of the water.
