Olavinlinna Castle, or Olafsburg, is the first Swedish fortress built with the expectation of resisting firearms. Located on a rocky island between two lakes. The construction of the castle began in 1475 and lasted 25 years. Initially, the fortress was named by the Swedes Nyuslott (New Castle), then Olavinlinna - the Castle of St. Olaf, in honor of the Catholic saint of the 11th century, especially revered in Scandinavia as the patron saint of all knights. Currently, the fortress has museums dedicated to the history of the castle and Orthodox icon painting. For connoisseurs and lovers of classical opera, Olavinllina Castle is probably well known. The oldest international opera festival is held annually within its walls. At the end of July, the ancient castle walls are filled with the music of the most famous operas performed by world famous artists.
