On July 22, 1896, in the presence of her grandmother, Queen Victoria, Maud of Wales, the youngest daughter of the British king Edward VII and Alexandra of Denmark, married her cousin, Prince Charles of Denmark, in Buckingham Palace. They lived at Appleton House at Sandringham Palace. There they had their only son, Prince Alexander (the future Ulaf V).
