Krishna was the son of Vasudeva and Devaki. Because Devaki's brother Kamsa wanted to kill little Krishna, he imprisoned his own sister and her noble consort Vasudeva. Fearing Kamsa, Vasudeva exchanged the baby Krishna for the girl born to Yasoda and Nanda Maharaja. On the night Krsna was born, Vasudeva took Him to the small village of Vrindavan, taking away the newborn daughter of Yasoda. Mother Yasoda and Nanda Maharaja did not know this and raised Krishna as their own son. Balarama was the son of Rohini, the other wife of Vasudeva. She lived in Vrindavan with Nanda Maharaja's family. Rohini and Balarama were taken under his care.
