It was built in 1593 in order to control the only road between Germany and the city. Today Fort Burtanye is a historical museum.
This fortification is a bastion system, an earthen rampart (curtain) with bastions and ravelins, often complemented by a moat (with water or dry). Seen from above, the bastion system is star-shaped.
