The memorial complex, perpetuating the memory of Soviet sailors who died defending and liberating Odessa during the Great Patriotic War, is one of two monuments to the Unknown Sailor in the USSR - the second is located in Novorossiysk.
The memorial includes a 21 meter high red granite obelisk, to which the Walk of Fame leads. The entrance to the Walk of Fame is opened by two steles of polished red granite. On the Alley, the heroes of the defense of Odessa are buried in single and mass graves - heroes of the Soviet Union Mikhail Astashkin and Vitaly Topolsky, marines, captains of ships that delivered cargo to the besieged city, submariners, border guards ...
At the base of the monument there is a bronze submachine gun and a peakless cap intertwined with a laurel branch of Glory. The eternal flame burns in a bronze wreath (oak leaves). On the four sides of the obelisk there are four bas-reliefs, in the pictures of which four pages of the heroic history of Odessa are captured:
defense of the city in April 1854,
the uprising on the battleship Potemkin in 1905,
the events of the January armed uprising in 1918,
Grigorievsky landing in 1941.
Since 1968, post No. 1 has been set up on the Walk of Fame - the Guard of Honor. The "Requiem for the Memory of an Unknown Sailor" (music by I. Aseev, verses by R. Rozhdenstvensky) sounds on the Walk of Fame.
