What began as an imitation of Brussels lace in the workshops at the manor houses, thanks to the thin fingers of serf lacemakers, turned into a miracle and luxury of Russian creativity.
One of the factories was founded by the landowner Zasetskaya, three miles from Vologda, where serfs weaved the finest lace for finishing dresses and linen, imitating Western European patterns.
