PUGACHEV EMELYAN IVANOVICH [circa 1742 - 10 (21) .1.1775] - Don Cossack, participant of the Seven Years (1756-63) and Russian-Turkish (1768-74) wars, cornet. In 1773 he declared himself Emperor Peter III and raised the uprising of the Yaik Cossacks, which marked the beginning of the Peasant Wars of 1773–75, called the Pugachev region after the leader. In the course of the wars, Pugachev's extraordinary energy, his courage, natural intelligence, extraordinary talent for leadership and organizational skills were revealed. On September 8, 1774, he was arrested in the Trans-Volga steppes by conspirators who handed him over to the authorities. Executed in Moscow on Bolotnaya Square by the Senate's sentence approved by Catherine II.
