Peter I the Great (Peter I) Russian tsar from 1682 (ruled from 1689), the first Russian emperor (from 1721), the youngest son of Alexei Mikhailovich from his second marriage with Natalya Kirillovna Naryshkina. Peter was the first of the Russian tsars to make a long trip to the countries of Western Europe (1697-1698). Upon his return from them, in 1698, Peter launched large-scale reforms of the Russian state and social order. One of the main achievements of Peter was the solution of the task set in the 16th century: the expansion of the territories of Russia in the Baltic region after the victory in the Great Northern War, which allowed him to accept the title of the first emperor of the Russian Empire in 1721. Under Peter I, for the first time in the history of Russia, permanent diplomatic missions and consulates abroad, outdated forms of diplomatic relations and etiquette were canceled. By order of Peter I, various expeditions were conducted, including to Central Asia, the Far East, Siberia, the beginning of a systematic study of the country's geography and mapping.
Peter I died in 1725, was buried in the Peter and Paul Cathedral of the Peter and Paul Fortress in St. Petersburg
