Princess Sophia Alekseevna (1657 - 1704)

Russian princess, ruler of the Russian state in 1682-1689 under two tsars - her young brothers Ivan V and Peter I. She came to power with the help of V.V. Golitsyn. In August 1689. there was a coup in Moscow. Peter I came to power, the former ruler of Russia was imprisoned in the Novodevichy Convent. In 1698. in Russia there was another streltsy uprising. Sagittarius from the west went to Moscow, intending to plant Princess Sophia on the royal throne. But they were stopped and defeated near the Resurrection New Jerusalem Monastery by the troops loyal to Peter I. Sophia was tonsured a nun, and strict supervision was established over her. She died in confinement in a monastery.
