Shwedagon Pagoda is a 98-meter gilded stupa in Rangoon (Yangon), Myanmar (Burma). The name comes from "Shwe" (translated from Burmese "gold") and "Dagon" - the ancient name of Yangon. Historians argue constantly about the date when the Pagoda was built. Presumably, it is already 2500 years old, but there is no substantial evidence for this theory. The gold that covers the pagoda is real. Beginning in the 15th century, many generations of Burma residents, from peasants to monarchs, donated gold to decorate it.
