Other names for Mexican prickly poppy include sacred thistle, Mexican poppy, prickly pepper, yellow thistle. In addition to the usual yellow-flowering Mexican prickly poppy, there is a white-flowering variety of prickly poppy known in Mexico as chicalote. The Mexican spiny poppy was an extremely important plant among the Aztecs. It was called "food of the dead" and was presented to the gods as a sacrifice.
