The urban structure of medieval China included two main functional purposes of the city: firstly, the city was the mainstay of the imperial power, the center of the administrative apparatus, and secondly, it was the center of trade and craft activities and public life in general.
Cities have traditionally been in the form of a square or rectangle, oriented to the cardinal points. In the ancient capitals of the empire, there were 12 gates, which reinforced the symbolic subtext of the urban planning.
During the reign of the Tang dynasty (618 - 907), a three-part division of the capital into the "Outer City", "Inner City" (government quarters) and the "Forbidden City" - the imperial palace itself. All three parts of the capital were surrounded by walls. A wide imperial tract led from the southern gate to the palace.
