The flag of Belgium is a rectangular cloth with an aspect ratio of 13:15, consisting of three equal vertical stripes - black, yellow and red. These colors have traditionally been the colors of the Duchy of Brabant. The shape is based on the shape of the French flag, although the origin of the proportions is unknown. The Belgian flag was an important symbol during the Belgian Revolution and the War of Independence of 1830, but it looked slightly different from the later approved version: the flag had three horizontal stripes (from top to bottom - red , black, yellow) and was more elongated in shape. A similar flag, also horizontal, red-yellow-black (top to bottom) was a symbol of the failed uprising against Austrian rule in 1789.
