Giuseppe Castiglione (1688-1766) is the most famous European artist who worked at the Chinese court. Italian by birth, he joined the Jesuit order at the age of 19 and then went to China as a missionary. Arrived there when he was 25 years old. In addition to his missionary work, he became famous as an artist. In his works he combined the traditions of the European and Chinese schools of painting. He was a court painter and architect at the court of the three emperors (Kang-hsi, Yung-cheng and Chien-lung). He died in Beijing.
The most famous painting by the master is devoted to the image of horses: "One hundred noble horses", 94.5 cm wide and 776.2 cm long. (Silk, ink, paints, 1728) Castiglione started work in 1723 on behalf of the emperor and worked on it 5 years. Castiglione, working in the imperial palace, very seriously approached the painting of his paintings. Most of his works are painted in tempera on silk. Silk painting cannot be corrected. Brush lines on silk are almost impossible to erase and requires a very firm hand. The exquisite works of Castiglione formed a style that successfully combined the methods of Western realism with the aesthetics of the Eastern worldview.
Castiglione, who was well acquainted with Chinese tastes, depicted horses swaying on the grass, galloping and frolicking alongside one another in the fresh, calm atmosphere of the countryside.
In the classical Chinese manner, not only horses are depicted, but also the technique of coloring trees and rocks, repeating the style of Chinese masters for centuries.
