According to the famous saying, all roads lead to Rome. In Japan, from the beginning of the seventeenth century, all roads led to the Tokyo Nihonbashi Bridge.
The Nihonbashi Wooden Bridge (Japan Bridge), 51 m long and 8 m wide, was the starting point of the Tokaido road linking Edo to Kyoto. He was a symbol not only of Edo, but of all of Japan. Transferred by order of the shogun in the eighth year Kite (1602) across the Nihonbashigawa River, which connects the Shimuda River and the canals surrounding Edo Castle.
The Nihonbashi Bridge became the "zero" reference point (geographical center) of the city, which it is to this day: the kilometer pillars measuring the distance to Tokyo on expressways show the distance to the Nihonbashi Bridge.
