The Nihonbashi Quarter ("Japanese Bridge") is one of the central areas of Tokyo, located just two kilometers from the Imperial Palace.
In total, there were five roads from Edo (modern Tokyo) to different regions of the island of Honshu. The most important was the Tokaido tract, linking Edo (the shogun's headquarters) and Kyoto (the ancient capital, the emperor's residence). Tokugawa Iyasu began construction of these five routes in 1601. This initiative was continued by his grandson Tokugawa Ietsuna, the 4th shogun of the Tokugawa shogunate, who declared these routes a priority in the economic development of Japan.

The ultimate goal of creating these five highways was the unification of Japan and control over local feudal lords (daimyo), who dream of creating their own small state with their own army ..
