Once, fleeing the fire, the elf family was forced to leave their homes. Tired, almost exhausted, the elves took refuge in a small fishing line that grew at the foot of the mountains. They started looking for a place to sleep, but the trees were already occupied by the forest dwellers. And the beautiful flowers refused to accept the strangers, explaining their refusal by the fear of damaging their lush petals. And only one, seemingly inconspicuous bush hospitably allowed the refugees to take refuge among their foliage.
After spending the night under his shadow, the elves decided to reward the bush for their kindness. And so, when the sun rose, hundreds of beautiful bright flowers bloomed on its branches. The plants that refused to give the elves a shelter were ashamed of silence - the hospitable bush eclipsed the most magnificent flowers with its charm!
But that's not all! To protect the rhododendron (this is the name of the very ancestor of our beloved azalea), the elves awarded it with another extraordinary property. It was this mysterious feature of the rhododendron (azalea) that caused the events described by Xenophon, the ancient Greek scientist.
During one campaign, Greek warriors, tired of battles, tasted wild honey from the fragrant flowers of rhododendron. The soldiers wanted to improve their strength, but they did not know that the honey from this plant has an intoxicating effect. So the progenitor of the modern azalea intoxicated the whole army. It turned out that the Greek warriors ate honey from the flowers of the wild rhododendron, the distant ancestor of the modern cultivated azalea. A long stay in the thickets of flowering rhododendrons can cause ill health - the smell bestowed by the elves is very strong.
