Since the Song Dynasty (960-1279), the city became an important center for the production of silk and brocade in China and remains so today.
Silk production has a history of almost 6 thousand years.
Some of the oldest samples of silk fabrics found date back to the last centuries of the 1st millennium BC. These findings are represented by the most different types of silk: the finest gauze, the most delicate satin, heavy and dense brocade.
The city was famous for its embroidery Su.
The traditional Suzhou embroidery featured very bright colors. Su embroidery is considered a gem of Chinese arts and crafts. Vivid pictures appear on products with Su embroidery. Animals, people, landscapes and flowers.
