Suzhou has many old scenic parks with artificial mountains, ponds, pavilions, galleries and bridges, as well as manors with landscaped gardens. The oldest of them is considered the "Pavilion of Blue Waves", built in 1044. The "humble official's garden" is distinguished by an abundance of water bodies, a wooded island and a wonderful bridge. The Lion's Cave Garden. It was created during the reign of the Yuan dynasty, whose representatives ruled from 1271 to 1368.
In the gardens, the principles of Chinese gardening art are clearly visible, which consists in creating the illusion of a universe in miniature in a small space: here and the water flowing between the rocks, and islets connected by humpback bridges, and winding paths leading to secluded corners with fountains, carefully trimmed plants and goldfish ponds.
During the period of prosperity in the 16th century. there were up to one hundred gardens and parks in Suzhou. Nine old landscape gardens in Suzhou are included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.
