During the Middle Ages, Suzhou was a thriving trading port on the Grand Canal, a major center for cotton and silk weaving.
The old city is surrounded by a fortress wall with six gates: northern, southern, two western and two eastern. The city was crossed by six canals from north to south and 14 canals from east to west. Therefore, Suzhou is often called the "Venice of China" or the "Venice of the East".
