Linderhof - "little Versailles in the Alps"
Linderhof is located in the Graswangtal valley on the territory of the Ammergebirge nature reserve in the center of a beautiful park next to the royal hunting lodge of Linderhof, which Maximilian II bought from the nearby Ettal monastery, on the very border with Austria. It was planned and built as a monument to an ideal kingdom and was never the site of Ludwig's long stay.
It got its name from the centenary linden tree (Linderhof - "linden yard"), which stood near the hunting lodge of Maximilian II, which was located in an open area in front of the presently existing palace and was used by the king during hunting.
Linderhof is dedicated to the Sun. The peacock was the symbol of the sun for Ludwig; the palace and pavilions were decorated with the image of this bird. Linderhof cannot be called a dwelling in the truest sense of the word. This is a temple to the deity, it is exactly the setting repeated in Bavaria of the 19th century, in which the French Bourbons once lived.
Linderhof Palace - the end result of a long period of construction and renovation, is the only large palace that was completed before Ludwig's death.
