Gaasbek Castle was built on the site of an old building (1240), destroyed in the 14th century. Rebuilt at the beginning of the 16th century, Haasbeck was acquired by the legendary Count Egmont (it was to him that Beethoven dedicated his Egmont overture). After the execution of the count, the castle changed owners frequently. Having turned out to be the property of the Marquis of Arconati-Visconti, Gaasbeck turned into a center of attraction for the beau monde. Today it is one of the most striking landmarks in Belgium.
