For the first time Suzhou was mentioned in 484 BC, when the city was already for several years the capital of the kingdom of Wu, which existed during the period of the “warring kingdoms” (475-221 BC). The Grand Canal, built during the Sui Dynasty (581-618), stretches from Beijing to Hangzhou, the capital of Zhejiang province, and passes through Suzhou. The canal brought water to Suzhou and contributed greatly to its prosperity. The city is characterized by picturesque landscapes, so it is not surprising that sometimes Suzhou is called “heaven on earth”.
