Patio (Spanish patio based on lat. Pat through Provence. "Pàtu") - an open courtyard (ik) of a living space, surrounded on different sides by walls, galleries, gates, trellises, etc. or a green hedge of trees and / or shrubs. The architecture of the patio dates back to the classical peristyle, which was widespread during Antiquity and the Middle Ages in the Mediterranean countries (Spain is the most prominent), and then in Latin America, as well as in the Islamic world. The patio first became a typical piece of architecture and landscape design in the possessions of the nobility and townspeople during the Roman Empire, spreading during the early colonial architecture and to other continents, in the Middle Ages, becoming a classic architectural element of the Spanish-Moorish style of architectural skill. Subsequently, it was adopted by other, non-Romanic cultures: USA, Australia (where the term patio sometimes means a veranda).
