"We should learn to understand each other better and, dare I say, like each other more."
Elizabeth Gaskell is the author of North and South.
The main character, a native of South England, Margaret Hale, is forced to move to the northern industrial areas. The impressionable girl is deeply outraged by the terrible conditions in which the workers live, but her resentment against the owner of the factory, John Thornton, involuntarily develops into a tender feeling. During the course of the novel, the heroes have to overcome many prejudices, learn to see the world more widely and fully, without dividing it into black and white, north and south, and learn kindness and humanity.
A mini-series based on the novel was filmed in 2004. The success of North and South was a big surprise for the BBC channel, whose producers did not expect anything from this mini-series and did not advertise it to a large audience. However, a few hours after the premiere of the first episode, the BBC forum could not withstand a large number of visitors, and it had to be closed. On April 11, 2005, thanks to the incredible success of the series, the TV channel released a DVD.
