Before the discovery of Australia and black swans, it was believed that these birds could only have white plumage.
- Only the black swan of Australia is not a migratory bird, although in search of food and shelter from the weather, flocks of black swans actively move around the continent.
These birds do not make distant migrations. In general, they rarely fly, rising from the ground with great difficulty, and even from the water they may not take off immediately. But if the black swan is already in the air, then it flies very quickly. The peculiar beauty of the black swan is especially noticeable when it hovers above the ground and its white primary feathers stand out sharply against the general background of bluish-black plumage.
These birds have the longest necks of all swans, which allows them to forage in deeper bodies of water.
Unlike the mute swan, the black swan has a real voice. Birds greet each other with them, accompanying it with nods of their heads. Sometimes swans swim out in the middle of the water surface, put their heads right on the water and trumpet loudly, beckoning relatives or simply expressing some kind of dissatisfaction.
