Alexandrina Louise Amalia Frederica Elisabeth Sophia von Zeringen, Duchess of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha. Alexandrina was born in Karlsruhe on December 6, 1820. She was the eldest daughter of Leopold, Grand Duke of Baden and Princess Sophia, daughter of Gustav IV Adolf, King of Sweden and Frederica Dorothea, née Princess of Baden. On her father's side, the princess was the granddaughter of Karl Friedrich, the first Grand Duke of Baden and his morganatic wife Louise Caroline, Countess von Hochberg from the old family of barons Geyer von Geersberg.
Alexandrina's candidacy was approved by Emperor Nicholas I as the wife of Tsarevich Alexander. After preliminary negotiations, the heir to the throne went to the Grand Duchy of Baden to meet the future bride. The meeting and conversation that took place disappointed both. The nineteen-year-old princess talked to the guest about the poetry of Goethe and Schiller, which bored him. On the way from Karlsruhe, the Tsarevich stopped in Darmstadt, in the Grand Duchy of Hesse, where he met Princess Mary and proposed to her.
At the same time, Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha, husband of Queen Victoria of Great Britain, urged his brother and Crown Prince Ernst to marry, whose licentious lifestyle had already led to the prince's infection with a venereal disease, which became the reason for his infertility. Ernst stopped his choice on Alexandrina, and she answered him with consent.
