Self-governing state in free association with New Zealand, an island in the South Pacific.
State flag. Adopted 1975. Its proportions are 1: 2.
The largest star stands for Niue, while the smaller ones symbolize ties to New Zealand. Union Jack recalls the British protectorate established in 1899 at the request of the kings and chiefs of Niue. The golden yellow symbolizes "the bright sunshine of Niue and the warm feelings of the people of Niue for New Zealand and its people."
