Republic of Korea
Civil and state maritime flag. Adopted 1882, last modified February 21, 1984. The proportions of the flag are 2: 3.
White is the Korean national color, a symbol of purity, peace and justice. The central emblem is a reflection of the Chinese cosmogony, in which the opposites of yin and yang unite and interact. Yin-yang, the synthesis of the Great Beginning, is called taeguk in Korean, and from this name comes the name of the flag - Taeguki. There are four trigrams in the corners, which are also composed of yin (broken stripes) and yang (solid stripes). Clockwise from the upper field of the pole part of the trigram symbolize: heaven, south and summer, moon, west, autumn and water, earth, north and winter and sun, east, spring and fire. Black denotes vigilance, steadfastness, justice, and chastity.
