Lucretia was a Roman woman famous for her beauty and virtue. The wife of the Roman patrician Tarquinius Collatinus and the daughter of the consul Spurius, Lucretius Tricipitina.
Sextus Tarquinius, the son of King Tarquinius the Proud, was captivated by the beauty of Lucretia, secretly entered the house in the absence of her husband and raped her. Lucrezia told her husband about everything when he returned, and stabbed herself in front of him. This event was the beginning of the rebellion raised by Lucius Junius Brutus and led to the overthrow of the royal power in Rome and the establishment of the Republic.
Throughout the centuries of Roman history, Lucretius has been highly regarded as an example of female virtue and determination.
