The flag is a Blue Ensign with the coat of arms of South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands. The coat of arms of South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands was formally adopted in 1985, immediately after the creation of the territory. Until 1985, the coat of arms of the Falkland Islands was used.
The coat of arms of South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands consists of a shield covered with white and blue diamonds, containing a green triangle containing a golden lion holding a torch and two yellow stars. A lion with a torch represents Great Britain and the discovery of the islands. The white and blue diamonds are from the coat of arms of James Cook, the discoverer of the islands.
The shield holders are the sea lion and macaroni penguin, which are found in abundance on the islands. Reindeer rises above the shield, from two herds of reindeer found on the islands of South Georgia. The sea lion stands on the mountain, while the penguin stands on the ice.
Under the shield is the motto Leo Terram Propriam Protegat, translated from Latin "Let the lion defend his country")
