Tokelau is currently a dependent territory of New Zealand. The official state flag of Tokelau until 2009 was the flag of New Zealand. Tokelau's flag is a dark blue cloth. There is a yellow triangle on a blue background. There is a narrow strip of yellow color under the triangle. The triangle occupies most of the flag panel. On the left, closer to the edge of the panel, four white stars are depicted, formed into a constellation. The aspect ratio of the flag panel is 1: 2.
The official raising of the national flag of Tokelau took place in 2009, on October 21. Earlier, on September 7, this flag was presented by the Governor General of Tokelau.
The blue background of the flag is the symbol of the Pacific Ocean. The yellow triangle on the Tokelau flag is the symbol of the Polynesian canoe. The four stars are the constellation Young Cross. In addition, each of the four stars symbolizes one of the countries belonging to the Tokelau metropolis. This is the island of Sue, as well as the atolls of Nukunonu, Atafu and Fakaofo. Previously, these atolls were independent. But in the middle of the seventeenth century, they were subordinated to the island of Fakaofo and created the state of Tokelau.
