The Lofoten Islands are an archipelago in the Norwegian Sea off the northwest coast of Norway. The islands are rocky and are divided mainly by narrow straits. Separated from mainland Norway by the Westfjord Strait. The archipelago consists of several large islands and many islets and rocks. Between the islands of Førø and Moskenesø is the famous Malstrom whirlpool. Despite the fact that the archipelago is located beyond the Arctic Circle, and also north of the cold poles of Verkhoyansk and Oymyakon, thanks to the influence of the Gulf Stream on the southern islands of the archipelago, the temperature of even the coldest month is above zero.
