The national flag of the Union of the Comoros in its present form was adopted in 2002. The previous flag was a crescent moon on a green background. In the new flag, the crescent moon is retained, but placed in a green triangle. In addition, four stripes were added, which symbolize the four islands of the archipelago: yellow symbolizes Mwali, white symbolizes Mayotte, red symbolizes Anjouan and blue symbolizes Grande Comore. The four stars next to the crescent also symbolize the islands. The crescent moon symbolizes Islam - the main religion of the Comoros
