The Vatican flag is a square cloth consisting of two vertical stripes of yellow (left) and white (right) colors. In the center of the white stripe is the coat of arms of the Vatican.
The coat of arms of the Vatican is represented by two crossed keys (gold and silver), tied with a red cord, under the golden papal tiara.
In the heraldic sense, yellow and white are gold and silver. It is believed that two metals should not meet in the same flag, so the Vatican flag is an exception to the rule, and a deliberate exception.
Gold and silver symbolize the keys to paradise and from Rome, which belonged to St. Peter and are also displayed on the coat of arms.
The red cord is a symbol of the unity of heavenly and church authorities. It was believed that Peter could solve earthly issues through his governors on earth - the pontiffs.
The papal tiara was a symbol of the power of the popes, their chosenness of God and authority over the entire Church.
The current version of the flag was approved on June 7, 1929 by Pope Pius XI in the year of the creation of the independent state of the Vatican.
