The snake lives in mountain caves, burrows and old hollow trees, in impregnable mountain meadows, in lakes and large bodies of water. The snake flies to its victims at night and remains with them until the first roosters or until dusk. The activity of the Snake increases during a thunderstorm.
The main function of the Serpent is to fight the demons that send hail clouds to the fields. The defeated Serpent falls to the ground in the form of a man or a large snake. According to Bulgarian legends, the cornfield on which the Serpent fell becomes unusually fertile. It is believed that each village has its own Serpent - the protector. Possessing a fiery nature, the Serpent causes drought where it stays for too long, therefore, ritual techniques for driving the Serpent out of the village during a drought are known.
