The Slavs living in the forests treated trees with great reverence, endowing almost every one with supernatural properties. Groves and forests were revered as sacred places. Why? Yes, because their greenery adorned the world, gave shelter and food to our ancestors, was, as it were, a sign of the special mercy of the gods to people. Therefore, we prayed in groves and forests.
Well, if there was still running water, this place was especially good for offering prayers. It was called Bogolissya.
Here were the sanctuaries of the gods, here they crowned the young with a "circle of raki-tova bush" - that is, encircling them around a tree, as if closing the circle of life (later the symbol of this was walking around a lectern and putting on a wedding ring).
