Freyja, the Old Norse goddess of beauty and love, was the sister of Freyr and the daughter of Njord and Nerthus, or Skadi. She was the most beautiful and most beloved of all the goddesses. While in Germany she was identified with Frigga, in Norway, Sweden, Denmark and Iceland she was considered an independent goddess. Freyja, who was born in Vanaheim, was also known as Vanadis, Dis Vanov, or Vanabrida.
Although Freyja was the goddess of love, she could be more than just affectionate, gentle, and loving pleasure. The ancient Scandinavians and Germans believed that she also loved war, and often, under the name Valfreya, she headed to the battlefields at the head of the Valkyries, choosing half of the dead heroes to take them with her. Therefore, she is often depicted in chain mail or helmet, with a shield and spear in her hands, while the lower part of her body was covered with the usual female attire.
