The cylinder (from German Zylinder) is a European men's headdress, which is a high hat with a flat top. Top hats were common throughout the 19th century as an everyday headdress.
Initially, cylinders were made of beaver felt, an expensive and rare material, which led to their high price and availability only to the upper strata of the population. Hence the association of cylinders with wealth arose.
Currently, the top hat is used only as a tribute to traditions at various events (for example, it is a must when attending the races on royal days in English Ascot, and is also part of the athlete's uniform in one of the equestrian sports - dressage). It is also part of the Illusionist costume (thanks to the myriad of options for the hat-pull trick).
