AMPHITRITA (Άμφιτρίτη), in Greek mythology, one of the Nereids, goddess of the sea, daughter of Nereus and Doris, wife of Poseidon. According to one version of the myth, Poseidon kidnapped her, according to another - she hid from his love in one of the caves of the Ocean, looking for shelter in Atlanta. Other Nereids followed her example. Poseidon sent a dolphin to search for Amphitrite, who found her and honorably delivered her to her future spouse (in gratitude, Poseidon placed the dolphin among the stars). Amphitrite was depicted rushing across the sea in a chariot, accompanied by other Nereids and Tritons. Revered with Poseidon. The cult of Amphitrite is probably of pre-Greek origin, like the cult of Thetis and other sea female deities.
