Perhaps when Caroline Rebaud, a French fashion designer, came up with a bell-shaped hat for women, she had no idea what a sensation the cloche hat would make in the fashion of the 1920s. Well-known designers of that era even specially opened ateliers for its tailoring, and the fashion for cloche hats from France quickly spread to other countries.
Translated from French, the word Cloche means a bell, and the hat was created in its shape. Cloche tightly fits a woman's head, and the brim of the cap - rather short - can be either dense, slightly diverging to the sides of the face, or soft and slightly wavy. A required attribute is a ribbon that separates the crown and margins.
The classic cloche is sewn from felt fabric. However, this material is not suitable for the hot season, so the summer models of the cloche hat over time began to weave from straw.
